AS 3745:2010 is the Australian Standard for Planning for Emergencies in Facilities. It sets out requirements for emergency planning, including what evacuation diagrams must contain, where they must be displayed, and how they should be oriented. Compliance is expected by fire authorities, councils, and insurers across Australia.
Any building occupied by staff, visitors, or the public is expected to have evacuation diagrams. This includes offices, retail shops, warehouses, schools, restaurants, hotels, medical clinics, gyms, childcare centres, and more.
Non-compliant or missing evacuation diagrams can result in fines from local council or fire authorities, failed building inspections, insurance complications after an incident, and liability exposure if someone is injured during an evacuation.
Diagrams should be reviewed and updated after any renovation, changes to fire equipment locations, changes to exit routes, or changes to assembly areas. Each diagram also carries a validity date; once that date passes, the diagram is due for review and re-issue even if nothing has changed. Validity periods run up to 5 years at most.
