If you have been appointed as a fire warden in your workplace, evacuation diagrams are one of your key tools. Wardens are the people who guide occupants to safety during an emergency. You need to know those diagrams better than anyone else in the building.

What Is a Fire Warden?
Under AS 3745, every facility must have trained emergency wardens. The warden team typically includes:
- Chief Warden: coordinates the overall emergency response from the control point (usually ground floor or fire control room)
- Floor Wardens: responsible for a specific floor or zone, ensuring all occupants evacuate
- Area Wardens: responsible for a specific area within a floor (large buildings may have multiple wardens per floor)
- Communications Officer: relays information between wardens and emergency services
Warden Responsibilities Related to Diagrams
As a warden, your diagram-related responsibilities include:
- Knowing the location of every evacuation diagram on your floor or area
- Being able to direct people to the nearest diagram if they are unfamiliar with the building
- Verifying that diagrams are current, undamaged, and properly mounted during routine checks
- Reporting missing, damaged, or outdated diagrams to building management
- Knowing every exit route shown on the diagrams for your floor, including alternative routes
- Knowing the assembly area location and being able to direct people there
- Understanding which fire stairs serve your floor and where they discharge at ground level
Before an Emergency: Preparation
Effective wardens do not wait for an alarm to start thinking about evacuation. Preparation steps:
- Walk your floor and trace every exit route shown on the diagrams. Do this physically, not just by looking at the map.
- Note any obstructions that block exit routes (stored furniture, propped-open fire doors, locked exits)
- Count the steps from your desk or work area to each exit. You may need to guide people in smoke.
- Check that fire equipment shown on diagrams (extinguishers, hose reels) is actually present and has current service tags
- Know who the other wardens on your floor are and agree on communication methods
- Attend warden training at least annually (AS 3745 requires this)
During an Emergency: Using Diagrams
When the alarm sounds, you will not have time to study a diagram. Your preparation pays off here. However, diagrams still play a role:
- Direct visitors and unfamiliar occupants to the nearest diagram so they can orient themselves
- If the primary exit route is blocked (smoke, fire, structural damage), use your knowledge of alternative routes from the diagram
- When sweeping your area, check that nobody is waiting near a diagram confused about which way to go
- At the assembly area, use the ground floor site diagram to confirm you are in the correct location
After an Emergency or Drill: Review
After every evacuation drill or real emergency, wardens should participate in a debrief. Diagram-related questions to raise:
- Were any exit routes blocked or difficult to use?
- Did visitors have trouble finding exits or the assembly area?
- Are any diagrams positioned in locations where people do not naturally see them?
- Do the diagrams still match the current floor layout?
- Were there areas where an additional diagram would have helped?
- Is the assembly area shown on diagrams still appropriate, or does it need to move?
Training Requirements
AS 3745 requires wardens to be trained before they can perform their role. Training should cover:
- Reading and interpreting evacuation diagrams and floor plans
- Knowledge of all exit routes, fire stairs, and assembly areas
- How to use fire extinguishers and hose reels (practical training)
- Communication procedures during an emergency
- How to assist people with disabilities during evacuation
- Coordination with emergency services on arrival
Warden training is available through fire safety companies, some RTOs (Registered Training Organisations), and local fire brigades. Refresher training should be conducted at least annually.
Keep Your Diagrams Current
As a warden, you are often the first person to notice when a diagram is wrong. A wall gets moved, furniture blocks an exit, or fire equipment gets relocated. Report it. Outdated diagrams are worse than no diagrams because they give people false confidence in routes that may no longer work.
