Data centres and server rooms have fire suppression and access control systems that create unique evacuation considerations. Gas-based suppression systems, sealed environments, security barriers, and the critical nature of the equipment all affect how evacuation diagrams should be designed and where they should be placed.

Gas Suppression Systems
Most data centres use clean agent gas suppression (FM-200, Novec 1230, or similar) instead of sprinklers to protect equipment. This affects evacuation because:
- Gas discharge warning (pre-release alarm) gives occupants a short window (typically 30 to 60 seconds) to evacuate before gas is released
- Once gas is released, the room is sealed. Re-entry is restricted until the area is ventilated.
- Diagrams must clearly show the gas discharge warning points and pre-release alarm locations
- Emergency abort buttons (to delay or cancel gas release) must be shown on diagrams
- Exit routes must lead AWAY from the gas discharge zone
Access Control and Security
Data centres have layered security that can complicate evacuation:
- Access control doors must fail-safe to OPEN during fire alarm activation
- Mantraps and airlocks must release both doors during emergency
- Biometric or card access systems must not delay evacuation
- Security cages within the data hall must have emergency release mechanisms
- Diagrams should show which doors require access credentials under normal conditions and which emergency exit alternatives exist
Diagram Locations in Data Centres
Evacuation diagrams should be placed at:
- Main lobby and visitor reception area
- Entry to each data hall or server room
- Network operations centre (NOC)
- Meet-me rooms and cross-connect areas
- UPS and electrical switch rooms
- Generator areas
- Loading dock and delivery areas
- Staff break rooms and office areas
Raised Floor and Ceiling Void Considerations
Data centres with raised floors and ceiling voids have additional considerations:
- Raised floor tiles may shift during rapid evacuation, creating trip hazards
- Sub-floor gas suppression nozzles may be present and should not be blocked
- Ceiling void fire detection systems should be noted on diagrams
- Cable tray routing above ceiling tiles can fuel fire spread between zones
- Fire compartmentation between data halls must be clearly shown
